Italia Conti Performing Arts College Relocation, Woking
The challenge
Italia Conti, the longest established performing arts college in the world, appointed Curchod & Co to assist with their relocation from three sites in Guildford and two in London into a single facility in the Woking/Guildford area. The requirement was to secure the 50,000 sq.ft. site for use as performing arts studios with associated training and administrative facilities.
Our approach
We undertook a search of the local market initially looking at industrial/warehouse buildings suitable for conversion. Through the search process we were able to identify a site in the Victoria Square as part of the town centre redevelopment in Woking town centre. We worked closely with our clients to fully understand their requirements and also liaised from an early stage with their fit out specialist advisers, the developer and Woking Borough Council. We work in a collaborative way with the developer, to secure a mutually beneficial long terms deal
The result
Having identified the opportunity at an early stage of the construction, we were able to secure a state of the art and purpose built performing arts facility. Through our detailed level of understanding of the clients long term requirements, we were also factored into the project the conversion of a former night club into a small theatre space, regular use of the Rhoda McGraw and New Victoria theatres as additional performance space.
Having negotiated a new 25 year lease this secured a long term future for the college. In addition, with approximately 450 full time students and up to 150 full and part time staff being based on site, the relocation providing a significant and positive to the town centres regeneration
